Westover

About

The Westover area stretches from Skibo to Fort Bragg and encompasses Yadkin, Morganton, Cliffdale and Reilly Roads. This section of town has a little bit of everything with shopping (both big name brands on Skibo Road and small local shops), dining (fast food and independently owned), tons of apartments and condos (luxury to budget), traditional neighborhoods, and residential areas lining streets parallel to strip malls with “sew shops” and military supply stores. It’s a busy place with a lot of people crammed in, and the traffic reflects the population density. However, the proximity to Fort Bragg can’t be beat and there are several gates to ease the commute onto base.

Neighbors

The apartments closer to post are filled with predominantly military residents. The affordability of multifamily units (ie. apartments and condos) is typically more alluring to single soldiers and young couples without school-aged children. Affordable single family homes can be found in established neighborhoods and are very close for those commuting to the South side of post.

Neighborhood Feel

As you leave the shopping area on Skibo, you’ll find affordable housing options and multi-family apartments and condos to suit all budgets — some boasting amenities like pools, fitness centers, 24-hour security and gated entry. New, luxury apartment and condominium complexes have sprung up on Morganton Road. Cliffdale and Yadkin Road have some older neighborhoods with single family homes established in the 70s, and you’ll find all sorts of communities on Reilly Road.

Big Plus

Great area for all styles of multifamily units with amenities like pools, fitness centers and gated entry.

The commute to Fort Bragg, particularly the southern side of post, is ideal at less than 10 minutes in most areas.

There are some fantastic “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants out this way with a variety of international cuisines. If soldiers aren’t eating lunch on post, they’re headed this way for a bite.

Things to Consider

Apartment dwelling can be a bit livelier than living in a neighborhood, so families should consider the noise level of potential neighbors. Motorcycles, loud cars, and even artillery noise from Fort Bragg can be less than ideal for nap time routines.

The traffic here is chaotic and intense. Yadkin Road is “lovingly” referred to as the “Yadkin 500” by locals. The main 4-lane road can be slow-going with many traffic lights and substantial congestion from residential and commercial traffic.

How’s the Market?

According to Zillow’s Rental Index, the median rental rate for single-family homes is $852.

School Scoop

Fayetteville contains 80 primary and secondary schools. Public schools in Fayetteville are in Cumberland County Schools and the district as a whole has been given a 5 by GreatSchools.org. Westover High School serves this area and is rated a 3 by GreatSchools.org.

In North Carolina, children can attend their neighborhood schools or charter schools. Low-income students are eligible for scholarship funding to attend private schools. Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” (there are several in Cumberland County) have the right to attend a higher performing school in the district.

Cumberland County has Choice Programs at many schools and they are highly sought after. A Choice School emphasizes a particular interest (arts, foreign language, science, etc.) and integrates that subject matter throughout all of the academics a student is presented. You may apply to a choice school even if you don’t reside in that zone, but the application/admission would need to be renewed yearly. There are also Choice Academies available at area high schools for students interested in a particular career field.
