Douglas Byrd

About

The Douglas Byrd Area is generally considered to encompass the area south of the main civilian hospital, Cape Fear Valley Hospital. The area includes commercial zones that have a busy, industrial feel to them and there are some large manufacturing plants that contribute to that vibe once you travel farther from town. Business 95 and the southern portion of Highway 87 (Bragg Boulevard) are also included in this zone, so you’ll find a lot of run-down streets and homes surrounding those freeways. Budget motels, strip malls and biker bars are sprinkled near the Crown Coliseum Complex.

Neighbors

You’ll find a variety of civilian and military here, along with a lot of people in the medical support fields due to the proximity to Cape Fear Valley Hospital.

Neighborhood Feel

You can find some newer neighborhoods here with modern construction, older subdivisions with ranch style homes, and several mobile home parks. It is common to find small 2 to 3 bedroom homes on large lots completely enclosed by chain-linked fences. Closer to the hospital you can find nicer neighborhoods with larger homes and well-maintained yards.

School Scoop

Fayetteville contains 80 primary and secondary schools. Public schools in Fayetteville are in Cumberland County Schools and the district as a whole has been given a 5 by GreatSchools.org. This zone is served by Douglas Byrd High School, which was rated a 2 by GreatSchools.org (for comparison sake, this is the lowest rated school in Fayetteville). Only one school in this zone earns above a 5; Massey Hill Classical School (charter school) was given a 7 by GreatSchools.org.

In North Carolina, children can attend their neighborhood schools or charter schools. Low-income students are eligible for scholarship funding to attend private schools. Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” (there are several in Cumberland County) have the right to attend a higher performing school in the district.

Cumberland County has Choice Programs at many schools and they are highly sought after. A Choice School emphasizes a particular interest (arts, foreign language, science, etc.) and integrates that subject matter throughout all of the academics a student is presented. You may apply to a choice school even if you don’t reside in that zone, but the application/admission would need to be renewed yearly. There are also Choice Academies available at area high schools for students interested in a particular career field.
