Fort Leavenworth

Fort Leavenworth dates back to 1827 and is the oldest continuously active military base west of the Mississippi River, and third oldest in the country! Originally established to protect westbound travelers on the Santa Fe Trail, it has played a role in American military history from the Civil War onward. In 1881, General Sherman established the School of Application for Cavalry and Infantry, which has morphed over the years into today’s Command and General Staff College and is one of the installation’s most recognized institutions.

Fort Leavenworth is known as the “Intellectual Center of the Army” because of the many school houses located on the base. The Combined Arms Center hosts the Army University, Army University Press, Army Management Staff College (AMSC), Combined Arms Research Library (CARL), Command and General Staff College (CGSC) and they all call Kansas home.

Families swoon over the time spent stationed here and most tend to live on the installation. Tight-knit communities, a relaxed pace of life, and a generally mellow vibe are cherished—yet passes quickly.
